The League of Legends division of T1 has had a turbulent week. Just hours before a July 8 game, the team’s head coach and former franchise jungler Bengi announced his resignation after word spread that star mid-laner Faker would be out for the foreseeable future due to an arm injury.

Faker has been the T1 franchise’s mainstay for 11 years, and he has only infrequently been replaced in the starting lineup. Every time he was benched, it was for tactical considerations rather than health issues. But with Faker out for at least two weeks, the team must now figure out how to function without their All-Star-caliber player. When will Faker be re-entering the T1 starting lineup?

Faker’s arm injury, which had been affecting his performance for a few weeks, was officially announced to be preventing him from playing on July 5. The day after Faker was unceremoniously benched due to an injury, then-head coach Bengi declared that a recovery period of at least two weeks was planned for Faker. Faker will therefore be absent from at least four of the T1 schedule’s matches. The match between T1 and Hanwha Life Esports on July 21 is likely to be his first competitive match back.

Faker is currently halfway through the two weeks, and T1 has lost both of the matches they were made to play without him. On July 5, the team suffered a 2-0 sweep loss to DRX, and on July 8, they were thoroughly outplayed by Gen.G in a match that would have been highly anticipated had Faker been in the starting lineup.

The team’s record was 6-2 when Faker suffered his arm injury, but if they lose all four of their remaining games by the time he is supposed to return, it could drop to 6-6. Faker could, of course, miss even more time depending on his health. Poby, a Challenger-level mid-laner for T1, will be Faker’s replacement in the mid-lane while he recovers from an arm injury.

Poby, a 17-year-old rookie with limited professional experience, had never competed at the highest level of professional League of Legends before making his trial-by-fire debut last week. He is, however, currently T1’s best choice for the mid-lane position. Poby will participate in at least two more T1 games, one against Nongshim RedForce and the other against Dplus KIA, before Faker’s anticipated return on July 21.
