Since 2010, League of Legends has offered a variety of competitive ranks, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Iron as well as Platinum and Diamond, as well as three Apex Tiers—Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. It has been in place for more than ten years and is a well-established and well-known system.

Riot Games has chosen to revamp the system this year, beginning with Split Two. This includes the elimination of promotion series and a decrease in placement games—from 10 to just five—to hasten ranked play. Emerald, the first rank in the League in six years, is also included. What is the new Emerald rank in League of Legends?

Deleting promotions makes sense, especially in my eyes after falling victim to it so many times over the years (and I doubt very much I’m alone in that experience either), and having to play fewer placement games each season should speed up how quickly we can start our ranked grinds, but an extra rank whacked into the middle of the long-standing competitive ladder has given many players cause for concern.

However adamant the League developers are that Emerald will be a good change, there are still many unanswered questions. Between the Platinum and Diamond ranks is the new Emerald rank. It was implemented to address the “very bottom-heavy distribution of rankings,” according to Riot.

More than 60% of players fall between Bronze and Silver, according to statistics from the most recent seasons, which is something Riot doesn’t particularly like. Instead, Riot prefers below-average players who are consistently ranked between Iron (the lowest position on the competitive ladder) and Silver.

To flatten the curve without adversely affecting players with Diamond rankings, the Emerald rank has been added. Starting in July 2023, it will exist between the Platinum and Diamond ranks and is anticipated to have a player percentage resembling that of the previous Platinum. I know this graph (below) can be helpful because I am a visual learner.

I’m very interested to see how this all works out as a League player who has advanced from starting in Bronze to moving up through Silver and Gold to finally entering Platinum last season. This is especially true now that Emerald is looking like a new challenge to take on. As a result, there should be a more equal spread between Silver and Platinum. Additionally, the Bronze rank will change into the average League rank that Riot developers claim it was always meant to be. Iron should observe no modifications at the very bottom.
