For their fans, Velocity Gaming’s early elimination from the VCL 2023: South Asia Split 1 was a shocking and upsetting outcome because they were one of the top-performing Valorant teams in South Asia. Anuj “Amaterasu” Sharma’s substitution for Debanjan “DEATHMAKER” Das during the first split’s playoffs drew a great deal of criticism from those who thought it was a blatant error. Velocity Gaming’s Decision to Replace Deathmaker with Amaterasu in VCL SA Split 1 Explained

Velocity Gaming’s opponents, True Rippers Esports and Gods Reign, defeated them in back-to-back games with a score of 1-2 after the substitution, earning Velocity Gaming condemnation from the team’s fanbase. After more than two weeks, the management and players of Velocity Gaming spoke out to discuss the situation and the reasons behind this choice.

Reasoning Behind Deathmaker’s Replacement with Amaterasu

In a recent documentary titled ‘The Experiment’ released by Velocity Gaming, the team’s management and players shed light on one of the most controversial decisions taken by the side in its history. Despite going undefeated in the group stage and winning eight maps in a row, the team decided to switch things up during the playoffs, resulting in catastrophe.

The decision to bench Deathmaker, who is known as the backbone of Velocity Gaming’s firepower and one of the best fraggers in South Asia, was surprising. He was replaced by Amaterasu, who was returning to the side after recovering from a back injury. In one of the segments of the documentary, Deathmaker revealed that he had gone home to Silchar, Assam for two days before Velocity Gaming’s last group stage match against MLT Esports, due to an urgent personal situation that had arisen back home.

Upon returning, Deathmaker was shocked to learn about his benching. “For one second, I felt as if I had been benched due to my two-day visit to Silchar. I could not understand anything,” said Deathmaker. The captain of this new lineup, Adam “ec1s” Eccles, expressed his opinion that the overall player switch was a mistake, adding that he did not expect the management to experiment like this for the playoffs.

Clarification on the Substitution

According to Amaterasu, it was not him who replaced Deathmaker, but rather he came in place of Domagoj “Doma” Fancev, who moved from playing the role of sentinel to duelist. The team manager, Adarsh “Euphoria” Singh, explained that this change was made because Doma was struggling in the role of a sentinel.

Euphoria stated that he believed the experiment was a good call and a pretty good decision to do all the alterations in the first split because they had nothing to lose. He wanted to try out a few things internally, and he wanted to see if Doma could add something extra. With the results of the experiment, it is safe to say that the timing for it could not have been better.

Velocity Gaming finished in 5th-6th place at the VCL 2023: South Asia Split 1 and is set to start their journey in Split 2 later today on 6th May against Orangutan, winners of the previous league. With all experiments conducted, hopefully, the team will step out with the strongest iteration of its playing five. It remains to be seen if the changes made will result in a better performance in the upcoming Split.
