It took a while before heroic agent Harbor finally appeared. The goal of the Valorant design team was to produce a controller that could compete with Viper. To deploy their smokes, they wanted a controller that did not need to “go off into another world” or consult a map, as was the case with Astra, Omen, and Brimstone.

However, despite Harbor’s clear similarities to Viper as a wall controller, he still opens up new play possibilities with his special skills. To give players more control over the angles that the wall blocks, High Tide, for instance, can be made to be curved. To determine how flexible High Tide should be, the team had to conduct experiments.

“We had a few bugs allowing super bendy walls,” recalled Mistakidis. “People would make walls that looked like scribbles on a page or loop-the-loops. Mirror matches with two Harbors in playtest got a little messy.”

Harbor is also meant to be one of the game’s more aggressive controllers, at the same time. While Harbor and Viper both have wall smokes, Harbor is on the opposite end of the spectrum, according to Mistakidis. He can contribute to defense in a limited way, but he excels at gaining ground, being more aggressive, and using his resources to help the team advance.

Harbor won’t have much left to work with after aiding in the setup of execution with just one charge of Cascade and Cove, but that’s intentional. Viper, on the other hand, can “hunker down” and manipulate her powers, which are powered by a refillable fuel gauge. The timings and pace of executes will be very different, even though Harbor should be competitive on the same maps as Viper, such as Breeze and Icebox.
