One of the biggest YouTube content producers today, MrBeast, was interested in Twitch’s new rules regarding advertisements and branded content. The entrepreneur with multiple businesses asserted that Twitch’s policy change would only “handicap” creators’ income.

Twitch revised its policy regarding branded content on June 6 with stricter requirements for in-stream advertising. According to Zach Bussey, banner, audio, and video ad-containing “burned-in” stream overlays are now prohibited by Twitch’s most recent policies. Twitch is criticized by MrBeast for ‘handicapping’ creators with its new branded content guidelines:

Jimmy “MrBeast” joined the protesting streamers and vehemently blasted the Amazon-owned platform for “handicapping” the creators’ incomes by enacting its more stringent branded content policy.

Since Twitch announced its new branded content policy, the three-time winner of the Content Creator of the Year award has been quite vocal. The policies have affected not only the smaller streamers but also the more prominent ones due to sponsorship work when streamers like Asmongold and Mizkif openly declare they will leave the platform with the immensely popular OTK Network.

The wider streaming community quickly voiced its disapproval of Twitch’s decision. Several creators, including MrBeast, expressed their displeasure with the policy change. “Hey, Twitch how about instead of handicapping what creators make, you help them make more?” MrBeast tagged the streaming giant in his tweet. “Seems more logical.”

MrBeast’s tweet received a lot of positive feedback, with other creators echoing his sentiments. Twitch user Nick Polom, also known as an employee, called the decision made by Twitch a “massive mistake” and praised the influential creator for taking a stand. Also not by himself was Polom. Asmongold and Tips Out, both co-founders of the streaming collective and content company OTK, threatened to stop using Twitch entirely if this decision was upheld.

Following the policy revision, Twitch quickly addressed any criticism that was raised. The streaming service claimed that its updated policy was “too broad” and that it had “not intended to limit streamers’ ability to enter into direct relationships with sponsors.”

Though it’s unclear if Twitch will change any of its upcoming policies, it seems the streaming service will keep them with revised language. The Twitch update has so far been met with persistent opposition from both viewers and streamers.
