There are absolutely no preloads, and the Baldur's Gate installation is enormous

I'm afraid you won't be able to, as much as I'd like to. You must download Baldur's Gate 3 on launch day and at that time only, according to Larian Studios, who estimate that the download size will be around 122 GB.

To many people’s dismay, there is no way to pre-download Baldur’s Gate 3 before its official release on August 3. The game will require over 100GB of disk space. Many have questioned whether they can pre-download Baldur’s Gate 3 since it releases in just a few short days. I’m afraid you won’t be able to, as much as I’d like to. You must download Baldur’s Gate 3 on launch day and at that time only, according to Larian Studios, who estimate that the download size will be around 122 GB.

Swen Vincke, the founder and CEO of Larian Studios, said in an interview with Time last week that he didn’t know if there would be a pre-download but that he had imagined there would be one, concluding with an ominous “We will see.”

There are absolutely no preloads, and the Baldur’s Gate installation is enormous:

Given his ambiguous response in this interview, the impending release of Baldur’s Gate 3, and the lack of new information, it is safe to assume that there is no preload option. Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access version is still accessible to players, but the full game’s abundance of new content—both inside and outside of Act One—would have been incredible to be able to pre-download and begin playing as soon as it became available.

“Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch on August 3rd at 5 pm GENT time, or your non-Belgian timezone equivalent…There will be no pre-loading of the game before then,” the post said. “The full release of the game weighs in at approximately 122 GB. Please note that your Early Access save games will not be compatible at launch; however, so much has changed that it’s really worth it to start afresh.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 fans who are eager to start playing will, unfortunately, have to wait a little longer for the download to finish because they can’t pre-download. Even worse: If you don’t use their “legally binding get-out-of-work note” or have slow internet, you might have to wait even longer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access since October 2020, so even though Steam permits preloading of games that haven’t yet been released, it is unable to support this functionality. Preloading gives users with slower internet connections or download speeds (hello, Australians) a head start on tackling large file downloads, but it appears that we’ll all have to wait until the third (or fourth, depending on your timezone) to begin the installation.
