The VCT Lock In tournament will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and will feature 32 teams – 30 partner organizations and two invited representatives from China. The competition will run from February 13 to March 4 and the winner will earn their region an additional slot for Masters Tokyo. According to data provided by THESPIKE.gg, at VCT LOCK // IN, the first international Valorant event of the year, the Vandal is the most popular weapon of choice, while the Phantom is second. The Vandal has been bought 2,443 times while the Phantom has been bought 1,775 times. Sheriff in third place is miles behind two rifles with 516 purchases. But phantoms have their place. Since the professional meta has switched to a double controller setup on some maps, Phantom is incredibly effective because players can’t see its tracers in smoke.

Phantom was praised by Sentinels star TenZ after last night’s match with LOUD against NRG. On one occasion, Loud player Seeker took out s0m on Pearl when he disabled Spike in the 24th round. This trend is not a new one, the Vandal has been the weapon of choice for many international tournaments. In contrast, vandals typically average about twice as many phantom purchases.

The VCT Lock In tournament will give fans a preview of how teams from the Americas, EMEA and Pacific leagues stack up against each other. Many organizations that have secured a coveted partnership slot overhaul their rosters in the offseason, meaning the playing field has been leveled anew. At last year’s VCT Masters in Copenhagen, Denmark, players started rounds with the Vandal in 41 percent of the total rounds played, with the Phantom accounting for 17 percent.

“We looked for agents that strongly resonated (or embodied the region) within each of our regional leagues and specifically for agents that players would be proud to represent. We chose Viper/Green for VCT America. , chose Yoru/Blue for VCT Pacific (it’s a bit of a stretch considering Yoru Esports doesn’t have a meta), and Astra/Purple for VCT. We chose the color scheme based on the primary agent assigned to each region’s league (Astra, Yoru, and Viper).

After the reveal, I spoke with associate art director Sean Marino and head cosmetics producer Priti Khanolkar about the thought process that went into designing these skins — especially because there are essentially four of them. The Vandal was the most popular weapon at the event. Unless the Phantom or the Vandal receive some sort of transformation, it is unlikely that the Phantom will reign supreme as the weapon of choice among professional players. Sorry, Phantom Gang. There is little room for mistakes. All teams are competing in a single-elimination bracket, so half the field will be going home after their first loss.
