The most embarrassing and terrible Steam record is broken by Overwatch 2

Part of the cause can be found in Blizzard's PvE ambitions. The free mode was one of the main selling points for the Overwatch sequel, but after months of delays, the concept was canceled outright, resulting in widespread criticism.

The long list of Steam’s lowest-rated games has a new champion, and it’s one of Blizzard’s flagship titles. Overwatch 2 has become one of the lowest-rated games on the platform today, gathering a massive pile of largely unfavorable reviews since its release—and it doesn’t appear to be improving anytime soon.

It dethroned less illustrious games like War of Three Kingdoms, Flatout, and Uriel’s Chasm with a 0.96 out of 100 rating on Steam250. Blizzard’s FPS has just been on Steam since August 10 and has already received over 100,000 reviews in a matter of days. Despite these ratings, Blizzard’s hero-based shooter has accumulated a little more than 75,000 concurrent players since its release and has 40,000 Twitch viewers as of writing.

The most embarrassing and terrible Steam record is broken by Overwatch 2:

The developers previously stated that they thought the Invasion update would help enhance Overwatch player engagement, but they definitely weren’t anticipating this. Overwatch 2 was dubbed the “biggest cash grab of the twenty-first century” by Steam reviews, with hundreds of other players awarding badges to top-voted, primarily negative comments. These reviews also come only days after massive changes to the Overwatch scene.

The Invasion update was released on the same day that Steam users gained access to OW2. The August update included a slew of improvements to maps, meta, and even game modes, including the long-awaited PvE. To top it all off, players received an entirely new competitive game mode, a new hero, and a slew of new maps. This upgrade has been in the works for quite some time, and the reaction hasn’t been what Blizzard had planned for.

Fans have flocked to the review-bomb Overwatch 2 this week, which is unfortunate for Blizzard because the game’s massive landscape change hasn’t deterred them enough. However, internal dev results have revealed a trend: most gamers logging into Overwatch has lost investment and are no longer engaged.

Part of the cause can be found in Blizzard’s PvE ambitions. The free mode was one of the main selling points for the Overwatch sequel, but after months of delays, the concept was canceled outright, resulting in widespread criticism.
