After finishing fourth in the Spring Split, Evil Geniuses’ LCS efforts have undergone a significant overhaul, which has now begun. Ale “Freeze” Knnek, the team’s head coach, and assistant coach Albert “H4xDefender” Ong, who joined the squad before the 2023 Spring Split began, have both been fired, EG announced on Twitter today.

This comes after EG informed the public via a message last week that roster changes would soon be made, with reports claiming that almost all of the current LCS players might be replaced. Given the level of success EG had throughout the season, the decision to purge and fire key members of the team’s coaching staff should be unexpected. The coaching staff built the foundation for the team’s long-term success in North America, and the team developed a solid core of players (the majority of whom are still under contract going into 2023). Following a report from Blix. gg that claimed EG’s “head of coaching staff,” Peter Dun, would be leaving the organization and returning to Europe to coach Team Heretics, the newest member of the LEC, this announcement was made shortly after.
He had previously served as an assistant coach for 100 Thieves, helping to bring the organization its first LCS title during his two years working alongside them, and before that was a professional ADC across European League circuits. “Was really excited to fulfill my 2-year contract,” Freeze said in response to the announcement. “Sometimes journey stops earlier than it is meant to be. Specific circumstances can always happen in organs.”
The career of H4xDefender spans a comparable time period but with a focus on the LCS. At the end of 2020, after nearly seven years as a jungle, he transitioned into assistant coaching for Team Liquid and Team Liquid Academy, where he worked with Guilhoto and Kold. Alongside the EG roster, he has stated on numerous occasions that, despite being appreciative of his contribution to the team’s success, the split was a “disappointing split” for him.
At this time, EG has not made any decisions regarding its starting lineup or announced any replacements for its LCS coaches. At the World Championship, the team’s core five was disrupted when starting AD carry Kyle “Danny” Sakamaki was unable to compete due to a personal matter. Other alterations to EG’s LCS roster and coaching staff have not yet been disclosed, but it is anticipated that they will be as the Summer Split approaches.
