Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has created worldwide excitement, becoming one of the most highly awaited games in recent memory. Unfortunately, because of its popularity, it has become a favourite target for hackers. According to a recent Reuters article, a hacker from the Lapsus$ hacking organisation delivered a threatening message over the company’s Slack channel, blackmailing Rockstar into exposing GTA 6’s source code. Teenage Hacker’s Attempt to Blackmail Rockstar by Exposing GTA 6’s Source Code.

The accused hacker, identified as Arion Kurtaj, is a teenager who now faces multiple charges, including three counts of blackmail, two counts of fraud, and six charges under the U.K.’s Computer Misuse Act. Apart from targeting Rockstar, Kurtaj is also accused of hacking and blackmailing other notable companies, such as Revolut, Uber, and Nvidia. Furthermore, he allegedly attempted to extort a $4 million ransom from the British broadband provider BT Group. However, due to his mental state being deemed unfit for trial, the legal proceedings have taken a different turn.

Previous Breaches and Leaks in the Rockstar Network

In 2022, Rockstar Games experienced a severe “network intrusion,” resulting in the unauthorized dissemination of various unfinished gameplay elements and assets through social media platforms. Although Rockstar swiftly responded to the leak, removing the leaked material as soon as possible, it couldn’t entirely prevent its widespread circulation. The leaked content even made its way into Goat Simulator 3, albeit briefly.

The aftermath of the breach caused significant frustration and disappointment within the Rockstar team. Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, expressed his concern over the leaks, stating, “We take leaks very seriously indeed, and they disappoint all of us. It’s really frustrating and upsetting to the team.” Zelnick emphasized that, from a business perspective, the leaks did not pose a significant threat. However, on a personal and emotional level, the incident had an impact on the Rockstar team.

Although Arion Kurtaj’s involvement was not disclosed at the time, Uber later released a blog post disclosing its collaboration with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate its own data breaches. The company suspected that the same hacker was behind the security breaches that targeted Rockstar.

Investigation and GTA 6 Release Speculations

As of now, it remains uncertain when exactly GTA 6 will hit the market. However, there is speculation that the highly anticipated game may see its release as early as next year. Meanwhile, a jury will diligently work to determine the extent of Kurtaj’s involvement in the alleged hacking incidents. It is important to note that the jury’s findings will not result in a guilty or not guilty verdict but will instead shed light on the accused hacker’s potential responsibility.

The ongoing case involving Arion Kurtaj and his alleged attempts to blackmail Rockstar Games and other prominent companies have brought the issue of hacking and data breaches into the spotlight. The highly anticipated release of GTA 6 has only intensified the focus on the security measures needed to protect valuable intellectual property in the gaming industry. As the investigation continues, both gaming enthusiasts and industry professionals eagerly await the outcome while hoping for increased security to safeguard against future hacking threats.
