Stefan Koza, a former translator of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series, was sentenced to 10 years in jail by the Fairfax County Circuit Court of Virginia on April 28th. Koza was found guilty of eight counts of possession of child pornography on July 14th, and each count was sentenced to 10 years in jail, to be served concurrently. However, the court gave Koza a partially suspended sentence, suspending seven years of the sentence on each count for five years. Stefan Koza, a former translator for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, was given a 10-year prison term with a 7-year suspension.
For the five years of the suspended sentence, Koza will be under supervised probation, which includes mental health counseling and completion of sex offender treatment. He cannot have access to cameras or visual recording devices, and he is not allowed to use devices that have internet access. Koza must pay all costs in the case and register himself in the sex offender registry for the state of Virginia.
Koza must still serve time in jail for the remaining three years of his sentence. Any time he has already spent in jail will be credited toward those three years. However, the court did not provide information on how much time Koza has already served and how much time he has left to serve.
Koza was arrested in December 2020 on suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornography. The Virginia Herndon Police Department arrested him as part of a joint investigation with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce. He was initially charged with five counts of felony possession and five counts of distribution of child pornography.
According to court records, police arrived at Koza’s house with a warrant on December 7, 2020. Koza dialed 911 and said someone was banging on the front door. He was instructed to open the door for police. Koza then removed computer parts, exited through the basement of the house, and ran to the edge of a wooded lot where he threw the components. He then ran back toward his residence, where he was arrested.
In a police report, Koza stated that he panicked when he realized police were at his house, and he tried to discard the computer parts to hide traces of child pornography downloads from the BitTorrent network. At the time of his arrest, he was aware he was distributing and downloading child pornography files.
The Sankei Shimbun reported that Koza was detained on July 15, 2014, in Kami, Miyagi, for trespassing and surreptitiously recording in a girls’ changing room at an elementary school, which is a violation of the Minor Offences Act in Japan. At the time, Koza, who worked as an assistant language instructor at the school, refuted the accusations. On July 14, 2014, the Kami board of education or school filed a criminal complaint with the Kami police.
Koza allegedly confessed to having lost the camera a month earlier during a staff meeting at the school, despite the fact that it was his. Koza was ordered back to the United States and was expelled from Japan as punishment for his crimes. He was also given three years of probation by the Japanese government.
Tokyo Shinobi Squad, Ghost Reaper Girl, and Jujutsu Kaisen are just a few of the Shonen Jump manga series for which Koza translated into English. Since January 2018, he has provided Viz Media with his services as a self-employed manga translator. Viz Media acknowledged that Koza was an independent contractor for the publisher and that they have a number of independent contractors who work on a variety of titles, but the business has not yet issued a formal comment regarding Koza’s arrest.
