The maximum number of Pokemon and items that players can hold in Pokémon Go has been secretly increased by 500 slots without any sort of announcement today by Niantic. Data in the handheld game’s code discovered by PokeMiners and shared on Twitter this week shows that the increase brings the number of Pokemon slots from 6,300 to 6,800 and the number of items that trainers can carry up to 5,800.

Players have been clamoring for this change for a while now. Experienced players are aware that in Pokémon Go, there is no such thing as having too much storage space. More is better, right? Before a significant occasion like Go Fest 2023, Niantic usually does it once a year at the very least. There is a small catch, though: it isn’t free. Costs associated with adding more Pokémon and item slots are 200 Pokécoins for each additional 50 Pokémon or item slots. That comes out to about $2 per piece. In order to reach the new limit, those who had already reached the old one would have to pay about $40.

Depending on how many Pokécoins a player has collected from gyms or by taking advantage of Pokécoin bundle sales, this can be decreased, but it still isn’t cheap. The increase hasn’t dampened players’ enthusiasm, though. One player remarked, “Never imagined I’d need that much storage, yet here we are. Right on cue! Before the first city event, it’s great to see the Pokemon storage grow,” said a third. Some people have even expressed the hope that Niantic will raise it even further before the year is out.

Nevertheless, those who were resentful of Niantic for making unpopular changes to Pokemon Go in the past seized the chance to criticize the creator. Some said, “It was too useful and a great improvement so you could advance Friendship without having to sacrifice items so obviously it had to go,” while others said, “I guess we were getting too much stardust.”

Niantic has recently made other changes invisibly. By enabling players to accept friend requests from other players after completing in-person raids, they covertly added a feature last month that makes it simpler for them to make friends.
