The Pluto manga by Naoki Urasawa is getting an animated series adaptation that will only be available on Netflix, according to the Shogakukan website for its Big Comic series of magazines, which started publicising the news on Tuesday. Although the anime was never formally announced, it was mentioned on GENCO’s exhibit at the MIFA film market during the 2017 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The anime was being made, according to GENCO at the time, by Studio M2. When he worked at Madhouse Studios, Masao Maruyama, the representative director at M2, acted as a producer for the anime adaptations of Urasawa’s Monster, Master Keaton, and Yawara! Manga.

The world that Osamu Tezuka described in his manga Astro Boy is reimagined in Urasawa and producer Takashi Nagasaki’s seinen drama, The Pluto Manga. The series contains eight collected book volumes and was published in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original magazine from 2003 to 2009. The manga has been translated and published in 20 nations, including France and the US. The manga’s North American publisher, Viz Media, explains the plot as follows:

Someone or something is attempting to annihilate the seven great robots of the globe in a distant future where sentient humanoid robots masquerade as humans. The top detective for Europol, Gesicht, is tasked with looking into these enigmatic robot serial killings; the only hitch is that he is one of the seven targets.

2015 saw a stage performance based on the manga with actor Mirai Moriyama in the lead role. An international performance of a second-stage play adaption that debuted in Japan in 2018 also took place later that year in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. For a 2010 live-action/computer-generated (CG) hybrid film of Pluto, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment purchased the film rights from Tezuka Productions.
