During a developer chat on today’s official Twitch channel, Blizzard revealed that it had abandoned its initial plans to create a narrative-based PvE campaign mode for the Overwatch universe. PvE played a significant role in the presentation when Overwatch 2 was first revealed at Blizzcon in 2019.

When the game was finally released three years later, the campaign was still unavailable, and since then, rumors have circulated about when, if ever, players would see this PvE system.

A fully independent PvE campaign in Overwatch 2 now appears to be extinct, though Blizzard still has plans to create and occasionally add smaller PvE story missions to the game. Blizzard has scrapped Overwatch 2’s original PvE campaign mode:

This is how Blizzard made it possible for Overwatch 2’s PvP-only section to be released in October of last year. Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss appear to have faced a difficult choice because the team didn’t want to return to neglecting the live game now that the new PvP content was live.

As work slowly continued on Overwatch 2, we began to pull more and more of our focus and energy away from the live game,” game director Aaron Keller said. “We had a difficult choice to make. We could continue working on our original vision for Overwatch 2 without a definitive end date in sight, or change our strategy.”

We shifted our values for how we want to develop the game,” Keller said. “No longer would we store content up for really big releases and leave the game sort of languishing on the side. Now we made a commitment to always prioritize the live game and all of the people playing it.”

However, due to delays and development problems, Overwatch 2’s hero mode (then referred to as simply PvE mode) was announced by Blizzard to be delayed and released at a later time. According to today’s developer live stream, Overwatch 2 PvE’s hero mode is being discontinued due to development limitations and rearranged priorities.

Furthermore, the live stream didn’t just concentrate on PvE. Along with new support and tank heroes, the return of the Summer Games competition, and the equally anticipated arrival of the creator workshop, Neuss and Keller also shared the remainder of the 2023 road map.

Despite the fact that this has led to the cancellation of Blizzard’s initial plans for a PvE experience in Overwatch 2, the developers stated that going forward they planned to continue to add events and cooperative modes that help to advance and expand the Overwatch lore, although it won’t be quite what they originally promised.
