Players have probably begun to notice that Sigma, one of Overwatch 2’s most potent tanks, isn’t available in all game modes as a result of a recent bug. Following a recent mid-cycle season four patch that gave Sigma some unexpected abilities if players used his ultimate in just the right way, Blizzard yesterday deactivated the tank from competitive modes.
Players discovered that they could give Sigma infinite flight by using his ultimate on enemies, charging up a second ultimate, and aiming that second ultimate at the sky, making it so that he truly harnessed the universal harness that is gravity. Overwatch 2’s Aaron Keller promised that his team would “provide an update as soon” as they could on Sigma’s whereabouts in a tweet. There is no word on when Sigma might return to competitive play, though.

The temporary removal of the hero was further explained by a community manager on the Blizzard forums. The hero is still playable in Arcade and unranked modes. Sigma is no longer available in Competitive Play, but you can still use him in Unranked and Arcade modes, including the brand-new Starwatch: Galactic Rescue Mode, the manager explains. He also requests that the community refrain from causing the bug.
The flaw meant that players could only use Sigma’s primary fire ability once they had unrestricted flight potential, but the absurdity of the glitch was amusing enough for players to record some hilarious clips. Because of the seriousness of this unintended interaction and the game-breaking bug associated with the hero, Blizzard decided yesterday to disable the hero in competitive modes.
Sigma’s ultimate now automatically casts if it reaches its full duration in the most recent Overwatch 2 patch. Sigma will, however, remain in his ult animation while in flight if he is looking at a skybox or another surface on which he cannot cast the ult. And it will continue so long as you stay alive. You must use two ults to activate it because this can only be used if Sigma’s previous ult was also cast at the end of its duration. Additionally, you are only allowed to use your primary fire while flying.
When Blizzard disabled other heroes in the past, they were out of commission for around a week. Mei was temporarily disabled due to a bug for about two weeks, while Bastion and Torbjörn were benched for about 10 days.
