Overwatch 2: Is the game cross-platform play?

Several developers have added crossplay matchmaking to their titles in the past few years. Popular games including PUBG and Fortnite have been supporting cross-play, enabling players to team up with their friends playing the game on different platforms. This also reduces the wait time for console players, reducing downtime between matches.

Since the game came out in 2016, Overwatch can be played on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch, but players were been restricted to their platforms’ servers for a long duration. In 2018, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan said that Blizzard was “in discussion” with Sony and Microsoft to bring their servers together. But are Overwatch and Overwatch 2 cross-platform compatible now?

In June 2021, Overwatch finally got support crossplay after a global Battle.net update. Console players who played Overwatch without a Battle.net account had to create a Battle.net account and link their console accounts to take advantage for crossplay.

How to create a Battle.net account

• Players need to navigate to Battle.net on a web browser
• Now, they need to click on the My Account tab located toward the top right of the screen and choose Create an account
• Once players are done creating their Battle.net account, players need log in with their new details to proceed with the process

How to link console account to Battle.net account

• Players need to turn on their console and launch Overwatch
• Players should receive an alphanumeric code and a QR code
• Players need to log into their Battle.net account on a browser and head over to Battle.net/pair
• Now, they need to enter the numeric code they received on their console to the pairing page to complete the linking process
• If players use the QR code instead, they will be automatically forwarded to the pairing page, and the alpha-numeric code will be entered
