Several developers have added crossplay matchmaking to their titles in the past few years. Popular games including PUBG and Fortnite have been supporting cross-play, enabling players to team up with their friends playing the game on different platforms. This also reduces the wait time for console players, reducing downtime between matches.
Since the game came out in 2016, Overwatch can be played on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch, but players were been restricted to their platforms’ servers for a long duration. In 2018, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan said that Blizzard was “in discussion” with Sony and Microsoft to bring their servers together.
