The biggest spoiler from One Piece Chapter 1051 suggested Yamato’s will to join the Straw Hats, and that has everyone elated. While the spoilers point towards many being happy, there were certain people who had long faces, as well. Yamato joining the Straw Hats was on top of the fan’s wish list for a very long time now. While this announcement by Yamato was long awaited, Oda did it at the right time. There are no throwaway lines or moments in One Piece, and fans who understand this may have been able to predict future story events far in advance. The conclusion of Wano Arc III took place and Luffy was able to defeat Kaido and the latter is now deep in the magma. This has now set Yamato free and she has made the choice. She is going to be a part of the Straw Hats and is going to join Luffy in his upcoming adventures.
To begin with, one has to remember that Yamato, always wanted to join the Straw Hats because she always wanted to be an Oden, and live freely and travel the world. The broader theme of One Piece also surrounds the freedom, and it has the core element of that, in the Enies Lobby arc when the crew saved Nico Robin from Cipher Pol. This theme is also expected to continue in the Onigashima. Yamato has been a captive on Onigashima since he was a child, and Kaido has no intention of changing that. Yamato wants nothing more than being free of Kaido so that he can explore the beautiful seas described by Portgas D. Ace.
Ace praised Luffy, and she had been following his exploits in the newspaper. Plus, he had just freed her. And, really, who else could she go out to sea with? She hasn’t interacted with either Law or Kidd, and even if she did, neither of them would want/like her. She couldn’t leave Wano because she was bound by explosive handcuffs. Now that Luffy has defeated Kaido, she is free to leave, which is why she wishes to join the Straw Hats.

In Oden’s journal, which Yamato kept, Oden predicted that the ones who would bring Kaido down would arrive in 20 years. Yamato thought Ace was one of those prophesied people after meeting him…but then Ace died, and Yamato remembered Ace’s story about his brother, who might be one of those, plus Ace revealed Luffy’s dream, which is the same dream as the one who Oden helped become the Pirate King, Roger… so Yamato has been waiting for Luffy’s arrival in Wano ever since Ace died.
Yamato has been a very powerful character in One Piece and she has, time and again proved herself. By joining Luffy, she is just proving her strength time and again and is now able to negotiate her way into the crew. Moreover, a Reddit theory suggests that Yamato knows that Zoro is going to die and and that Luffy is going to need someone of comparable strength. She is going to be that strength that the crew will require, come what may.
