10. Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Mashle in a file photo (image: Twitter/@animetv_jp)
  • Release Date: April 2023

Mashle: Magic and Muscles will be very successful (in some aspects, quite literally). The manga by Hajime Komoto borrows ideas from various works and “mashes” them together to create a humorous parody that can also be quite somber. The characters and panels’ initially straightforward designs draw you into the humor of the universe, but as the fights themselves become bigger and more dramatic, the presentation eventually becomes more complex. Are you aware of how Asta from Black Clover trained his body to become tough so he could endure in a magically active world? Mash Burnedead is a hero who can catch sword swings by tensing the muscles in his eyes. Take that and exaggerate it to an absurd new level. One-Punch Man’s Saitama would much prefer to eat cream puffs and hang out with his buddies than battle anyone who tries to persuade him that his well-toned, muscular body cannot match their outstanding magical abilities. It’s as if Saitama had been transplanted into the Harry Potter universe. It just depends on whether or not the anime retains the humor from the manga.

9. Undead Unluck

  • Release Date: TBA 2023

This year, Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump series from the 2018–2020 generation has been making steady progress in the world of anime, and like Mashle before it on this list, Undead Unluck is notably distinctive. This story, which is based on Yoshifumi Tozuka’s manga, centers on a girl named Fuuko Izumo, whose “power” is extremely bad luck, which causes death for anybody she comes into contact with. She eventually joins forces with Andy, an undead immortal who seeks to die a beautiful death using her power. The two establish the strangest alliance ever imagined. From there, things inevitably become even more chaotic, and if the anime can portray that peculiar nature, Undead Unluck is going to be a thrilling experience.

  • Release Date: April 2023

Explosion! That’s right the beloved character from Konosuba Megumin will grace the fans this year with some crazy explosions. The KonoSuba huge return to the world of anime with a new spin-off focused entirely on Megumin will set off the Spring 2023 anime season with a bang. KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! adapts the official spin-off series that showcases more of the magical academy from her hometown setting fans were introduced to during the Crimson Legend movie. It is set before the events of the main series and focuses on the explosion of a magic-loving mage before she joined Kazuma Sato’s party. It will be a delightful refresher of the absurd humor fans enjoy, and a third season is also in the works.

7. Zom 100: Bucket list of the Dead

  • Release Date: July 2023

One of the more unexpected announcements we’ve received recently involved one of the most intriguing new anime series coming our way this Summer. The live-action adaptation of the Alice in Borderland series, created by Haro Aso, was a huge hit, and it seems probable that the same will be true with his most recent project, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. Although zombie tales may be stale by this point, this presents the most original perspective that fans have ever seen in an anime. Following a guy who’s so burned out by work that the apocalypse ends up being a blessing, this series is backed by a powerhouse team with the likes of Hiroshi Seko (scriptwriter for the likes of Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, and more) on board. If the anime can capture the energy of the original manga, we’re looking at one of the biggest hits of the year overall.

  • Release Date: July 2023

Jujutsu Kaisen, which ruled the world with its debut season and prequel film, is finally returning this summer with brand-new episodes. The events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 hinted at a deeper look into Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto’s past, which Season 2 will continue where the first season left off. By the way, it’s only the first significant arc of the upcoming season; the anime has also promised that we will see the eagerly awaited Shibuya Incident arc in action. Let’s face it, Jujutsu Kaisen season 1’s conclusion wasn’t exactly memorable. During the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event, a significant conflict broke out between the kids and Hanami and his crew. In order to steal Sukuna’s fingers and Special Grade Curse Wombs inside the school grounds, Mahito used his team to create a distraction.

However, instead of ending with this arc, the season instead began a new one that delves into Megumi Fushiguro’s background. With the Hidden Inventory Premature Death arc, which also has a character with the last name Fushiguro, and the backstory of Satoru Gojo and his best buddy, Suguru Geto, Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will continue this trip down memory lane. The thrilling Shibuya Incident Arc, in which we get to see more Gojo action, will also be included.

1. Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3

  • Release Date: 4 March 2023

The most anticipated new anime of the year is undoubtedly the return of Attack on Titan. The “final season” might have become a bit of an in-joke among fans as it has been running across multiple parts for the last few years, but there’s no question that there’s still a huge following waiting to see how the anime brings it all to an end. There’s only a little more from Hajime Isayama’s original manga series left to cover in these final two specials for the anime, and given how even the creator is looking back regretfully on how some of it was handled, this adaptation is far more intriguing than ever. Not only do we need to see if the anime can accurately reflect all that happened in the conclusion, but we also need to see if any of the more contentious decisions will be changed. For all of these reasons, as well as the fact that it will conclude a significant heritage franchise, it is among the most exciting new releases of the year.
