Tsukumogami Kashimasu: Exploring the Spirited Edo Period

Premiering in July 2018, Tsukumogami Kashimasu transports viewers to the captivating era of Edo. Set in the Fukagawa ward, part of old Edo, which is present-day Tokyo, the story delves into the lives of its residents during the Edo period. In this region prone to fires and floods, individuals opt to rent everyday items, including pots, futons, and clothing, rather than purchasing them outright. This practice ensures their mobility during emergencies. Okō and Seiji, the older sister and younger brother, manage a rental shop named Izumoya, which provides these essential items.

However, the shop’s inventory holds a secret. Among the rented objects lie tsukumogami, inanimate objects that have transformed into spirits after a hundred years of existence. Occasionally, the siblings lend these sentient items to their customers. Both Okō and Seiji possess the unique ability to see and communicate with these spirited entities, attracting other tsukumogami to their store. The original novel, penned by Lily Hoshino, was published by Kadokawa in 2007. A sequel titled Tsukumogami, Asobō yo (Tsukumogami, Let’s Play) followed in 2013.
