Game developer Riot Games has announced the expansion of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) to include teams and players from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Turkey.The overhaul takes effect in 2023, and adds an additional split to the LEC’s normal two-split calendar. The main LEC franchise remains with ten known teams from the audience, as well as Team Heretics, which purchased the space previously belonging to Misfits, and KOI, which merged with Rogue. Each division winner will secure a spot in the LEC Season Finals, an end of season tournament featuring the six best-qualified teams from EMEA throughout the year.Additionally, the winner of the Spring Split will represent the region in the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI). The LEC Season Finals will, therefore, provide qualification for the League of Legends World Championship.Riot Games said on its dedicated LoL EMEA website that the format is a “pilot program as LoL Esports considers sweeping changes to the competitive calendar and season structure in 2024.”

It added that if the format is successful among fans, teams and professionals, it may expand the structure to more regions in the future.
