When it comes to champions fitting into various voids around Summoner’s Rift, Riot Games gives LoL champions a ton of flexibility. A champion can, however, occasionally stray too far from their intended course and require some assistance to get back on course.

League Patch 13.14, LoL champions which went live last week along with the long-awaited Soul Fighter event, included Xerath as an unexpected but welcome addition to the buffs. These adjustments—the first significant ones to the Magus Ascendant since the contentious durability update last year—included enhancements to Xerath’s passive that give him more mana sustain as well as more casts and power for his ultimate.

Due to recent buffs, a long-forgotten LoL champion is enjoying the spotlight in two roles:

The presence of Xerath in the draft phase has significantly increased as a result of these straightforward but effective changes, both in his intended mid-lane position and in his more typical appearance as a support, which was an area Riot was hoping these changes would greatly help. According to League stats website OP.GG, Xerath currently holds a 52.66 percent win rate in the mid-lane in particular, an eight percent improvement over the Magus Ascendant’s previous patch-to-patch performance.

Although primarily in the support role where he can better manage his mana alongside his lane partner, Xerath’s long range as a mage has allowed him to thrive as a poke champion. However, as a result of the adjustments made to his passive, Xerath is now able to use more than just a barrage of auto attacks to overwhelm his opponents in the mid-lane. He can even scale to the point where he can use up to seven ultimates in a single cast.

In addition, and as Riot foresaw in the patch notes for Patch 13.14, Xerath’s prominence in the support role has also grown, which is especially helpful for the poke mage in a meta of engage champions. To make up for this, however, a small change to lower his mana was added to this patch to make sure he can’t just spam spells unabatedly. The champion hasn’t been significantly hampered by these net buffs, though.

The upcoming Patch 13.15, LoL champions which is scheduled to go live on August 2, does not include Xerath despite this sharp increase in win, pick, and ban rates. But in addition to introducing new skins from the Soul Fighter cast to the game, this patch will fix balancing issues with champions like Aatrox and Kaisa.
