C9’s victory in the 2023 LCS Spring Finals ends the Golden Guardians’ miraculous split:

With today’s victory, C9 not only won another domestic championship but also guaranteed themselves the top seed from North America at this year’s Mid-Season Invitational. MSI will start on May 2, but C9 will start later because they were seeded directly into the bracket stage of the competition as a result of today’s victory.

In the first and second games of the series, Golden Guardians built up sizable early game leads, forcing C9 to play defensively in the hopes of mounting a comeback. At the 15-minute mark in both games one and two, Golden Guardians held back-to-back leads of 5,800 gold. C9 only fully recovered in game one, but their dominance in games three and four was sufficient to win the series by a 3-1 margin. The difference-maker for C9 in those late-game matches was the Spring Split MVP, Berserker. In games three and four, he recorded a combined score of 13/0/6.

What today’s outcome means for NA at MSI 2023:

Although Golden Guardians and C9 were already guaranteed spots in the tournament going into the day, the Mid-Season Invitational this year will welcome the top two teams from each of the four major pro scene regions (North America, China, Korea, and EMEA). As a result, seeding at the event was on the line. The MSI tournament is now divided into two stages: the play-in stage and the bracket stage. With the exception of the LEC, major regions seed their champions into the MSI bracket stage, while the runners-up must compete in the play-in rounds.

This season’s first North American team to compete internationally will be Golden Guardians, who will enter the MSI play-in stage alongside other major region second seeds (such as Korea’s T1) and the scene’s minor region champions (like PSG Talon of the PCS). The MSI play-in stage will start on May 2 in London, United Kingdom, and the LCS will resume its domestic schedule on June 1 when the Summer Split starts.
