BGMI Ban: Here’s what we know so far.
The game was taken down without any notice at 7 PM IST, on July 28, 2022. Google gave out a statement that said they were given orders by the government to take down th game from their store, and they had to comply. The same order was given to App Store. A little while after the game the removed from the PlayStore, it was also removed from there as well.
“On receipt of the order, following established process, we have notified the affected developer and have blocked access to the app that remained available on the Play Store in India.”
The BGMI game has been confirmed to have been deleted from both the Google Play store and the Apple App store, despite the fact that the IT ministry has not yet made an official announcement. Additionally, Krafton acknowledged the change and stated “We are clarifying how BGMI was removed from Google Play store and the App store and will let you know once we get specific information.”
Rajya Sabha Member V Vijayasai Reddy inquired about the IT Ministry’s response to apps like PUBG last week and said “some children have also committed crimes when they were restrained from playing the game”.
Minister of State for Electronics & IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “There are various reports and grievances received in Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), conveying that apps that were blocked are appearing with new avatar by using similar sounding names or rebranded with the same functionality. All such reports and grievances have been forwarded to Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the requesting agency, for examination. MeitY follows the due process as defined in the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009″.

The impact of the ban was clearly seen on Krafton as its shares plumetted 9% on the news on Friday. India contributed a high single digit proportion of the company’s revenue in the first quarter of this year, the company claimed in May. The game was blocked in the country after a direct order was received from the government, and Google took cognisance.
Krafton will have a meeting with the ministry and only then things will be confirmed.
