The hero then experienced a phase where, following a round of nerfs, there was little reason to pick him at all because of how little damage he produced in comparison to other hitscan heroes like Soldier: 76.

Few skills in Overwatch 2 have undergone as many changes as Cassidy’s Magnetic Grenade. Since the hero underwent a significant rework for Overwatch 2, the tiny, sticky explosive device has caused more than its fair share of issues. Blizzard is still attempting to balance and adjust the ability, but it has proven challenging.

The most recent Overwatch 2 Director’s Take, which was published on August 4, featured Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller previewing some of the most significant hero balance changes upcoming for Overwatch 2: Invasion, the game’s upcoming competitive season. Another change is being made to one Overwatch 2 hero’s most determined ability:

To rehabilitate the archetypal cowboy, Magnetic Grenade has already undergone three balance patches since April 2023. This time, the adjustments are made to the ability and how it works with Cassidy as a whole rather than just buffing or nerfing specific parts of it.

The Magnetic Grenade’s maximum range will be reduced from its current maximum of 1.3 meters in season six, which will be the main change to the ability. Moreover, the grenade’s maximum travel time has been reduced to 1.5 seconds, according to Keller. The damage falloff of Cassidy’s main weapon, the Peacekeeper, will also be altered, according to Keller, even though the ability itself will be diminished. Cassidy will also gain more health, Keller added.

Cassidy’s old Flashbang was replaced with Magnetic Grenade when it was first introduced. To lessen crowd control and slightly alter the gameplay, this was taken out of the Overwatch 2 beta during the spring of 2022.

In the brief time that it has existed in Overwatch, the ability has now undergone a total of four changes. Many people will recall the season five patch from June, which completely overpowered Magnetic Grenade by improving both its applied slow and magnetic properties. The season five update led some players to believe that Blizzard had abandoned its plans to scale back crowd control. In the end, Blizzard scaled back these changes in a patch released on June 28 and stated that the Magnetic Grenade would “require slightly more demanding aim and intention in its use.”

It’s also intriguing that the Peacekeeper’s damage falloff was altered because Cassidy players have been unhappy with it ever since Overwatch 2’s predecessor. In the right hand, Cassidy—then known as McCree—could act as a sniper if the player hit their shots because his damage falloff was so slight.

The hero then experienced a phase where, following a round of nerfs, there was little reason to pick him at all because of how little damage he produced in comparison to other hitscan heroes like Soldier: 76. Although Keller didn’t specifically mention any adjustments to the Peacekeeper’s damage falloff this time around, the way he worded the post gives the impression that the cowboy’s revolver will get a slight improvement.
