Champions have come and gone in League of Legends over time, the Summoner’s Rift map has undergone significant changes, and the game’s meta has completely changed as Riot Games developers tried to maintain equilibrium in the challenging MOBA.

The red and blue buffs, however, have remained essentially the same over the years—until now. The main jungle buffs, Crest of Cinders and Crest of Insight will see significant changes in the upcoming update, Riot developer Phroxzon said on July 10. After 4 years without any changes, Riot is finally working on LoL jungle buffs:

As of today’s announcement, both Red and Blue Buffs will receive a tune-up in League Patch 13.14 as part of Riot’s strategy to change the jungle meta. Crest of Cinders, also known as Red Buff, received its first balance sweep in 13.12 however.

The Blue Buff, also known as the Crest of Insight, will change for the first time in almost five years. Blue Buff used to grant 10 ability haste at all levels, but now the amount granted scales with the player’s level. A jungler will now only start the game with five haste abilities, increasing to 10 once they reach level six. At level 11, the bonus grants 15 ability haste; at level 16, it reaches its maximum and gives 20 ability haste. Due to the change, early-game clear times for champions who rely on spamming abilities to farm will increase.

Since League Patch 6.24, which was released on December 7, 2016, when Blue Buff’s duration was extended to two minutes and its bonus ability power bonus was lost, it hasn’t been altered in this way. The haste ability’s introduction as a stat necessitated a minor adjustment in Patch 10.23 in 2021, but aside from that, the Blue Buff cooldown reduction offered remained roughly unchanged.

Since the removal of bonus true damage to turrets in Patch 8.7 in April 2018, Red Buff’s adjustments in June’s Patch 13.12 marked the first time Crest of Cinders had been modified. These metrics are once again in the spotlight for 13.14 after being removed in June’s patch: bonus health regeneration, physical true damage, and slow after-dealing damage.

In the early game, Red Buff’s melee movement slow has been halved to 5%, similar to Blue Buff’s ability haste, before returning to pre-nerfed levels once a champion has leveled their ultimate. Because enemy movement won’t be as constrained, melee junglers will need to exert more effort to close the gap quickly. It’s not yet clear how much of a meta-shift these changes will represent, but with League Patch 13.14 scheduled for July 19, players won’t have to wait long to find out. These modifications are only provisional until they are made live, as always.
