Louis Meintjes secured his first Grand Tour stage win at the 2022 Vuelta a España in a splendid performance on a steep final climb on Sunday, 28 August. Remco Evenepoel crossed the line fourth to stay on top in the general classification to second-placed Enric Mas. Italy’s Samuele Battistella ended in the second post with another good performance.

Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) suffered a drawback after Sepp Kuss withdrew to a fever. Pieter Serry also left the race following a positive COVID-19 test. Bahrain Victorious announced that Wout Poels had also tested positive for the virus. The race began in Villaviciosa with riders moving via the neutral zone, with other riders such José Manuel Diaz Gallegos and Simon Guglielmi also in the fray after an improved showing.
