Shikhar Dhawan scored yet another fifty as Delhi Capitals got the better of Punjab Kings to go on top of the table in IPL 2021.
Delhi Capitals continued their fine run in IPL 2021 as they notched up their sixth win in eight games. By beating Punjab Kings for the second time in this edition, Delhi Capitals are now at the top of the table with 12 points. Rishabh Pant’s team will be needing at least three wins to ensure that they seal their spot in the playoffs. The basis for Delhi Capitals’ domination in IPL 2021 has been the opening partnership of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. Shikhar Dhawan is the leading run-getter in IPL 2021 and his fifty on Sunday laid the foundation for another big win.
Delhi Capitals’ opening partnerships have laid the base for the team’s success. In the first game against Chennai Super Kings, Dhawan and Shaw shared a 138-run stand. After failing against Rajasthan Royals, the duo stitched a 59-run stand against Punjab Kings in Mumbai. Dhawan smashed 45 against Mumbai Indians and against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shaw and Dhawan shared an 81-run stand. After a failure against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Dhawan and Shaw roared back with a brilliant 132-run stand against Kolkata Knight Riders.
After the 63-run stand against Punjab Kings that laid the foundation, Dhawan said Shaw’s aggressive batting was making life very easy for him.
“I have been playing with Prithvi for three years now and he makes it easy for me as well. Really happy with the way we chased the score down. Prithvi and I were able to get a great start. Smith chipped in nicely and I knew I had to go till the end. Perfectly crafted innings, I enjoyed it. Once we knew that we can close the game, we wanted to finish the game early around 19 overs, but Hetmyer finished it in the 18th,” Dhawan said.
Pant, the skipper, also paid tribute to the brilliance of Dhawan and Shaw at the top. “Shikhar and Prithvi gave us a very good start. It feels so good when you have a great start in every match. Most of the things are sorted but we need to try a few things for the Kolkata leg,” Pant said.
Delhi Capitals now have a six-day break before they take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Narendra Modi stadium. After that, all their other league games will be in Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
