Shikhar Dhawan named captain for Sri Lanka tour, maiden call-up for 5 players

Nitish Rana, Chetan Sakariya, Varun Chakravarthy, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Krishnappa Gowtham have been handed their maiden Team India call-ups.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has announced the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series as well as the T20I series comprising of the same number of games, scheduled against Sri Lanka in the month of July. The matches will be played at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Shikhar Dhawan has been named as the captain of the Team India squad with Bhuvneshwar Kumar appointed as the vice-captain.

Openers Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are two of the players who have been handed maiden call-ups for the series against Sri Lanka. Both the players were in sensational form for their IPL franchises Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) respectively in the IPL 2021, when it was being held previously. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsman Nitish Rana, CSK all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham and Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Chetan Sakariya are the other cricketers to have been handed maiden call-ups. The Indian team will arrive in Sri Lanka on 28th June.

The three ODIs will be held from 13th July to 18th July in Colombo. The T20I series will take place in the same city from 21st July to 25th July.

India’s squad: Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Rana, Ishan Kishan (Wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (Wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, K Gowtham, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Vice-captain), Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, Chetan Sakariya.

Net Bowlers: Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, Sai Kishore, Simarjeet Singh.

There will be room quarantine from 29th June to 1st July. The same will be followed by quarantine/practice from 2nd July to 4th July. Players will get a chance to practice or rest from 5th July to 12th July. The series is expected to be an exciting one, with the Indian team comprising of quality players.
