Incredible batting performances by Jason Roy and Kane Williamson ensured that the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured only their second victory of the season against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Roy gave SRH the perfect start to what could have been a tricky run chase. It was beautifully capped off by skipper Williamson as he scored his half-century with the match-winning stroke. The Royals ended their innings with the score of 164-5 and SRH replied with 167-3, earning a seven-wicket victory for Williamson’s men. For the Royals, the defeat was a devastating blow for their play-off aspirations. SRH are placed bottom on the league table and perhaps it was a match that the Royals should have won considering the form they are on. The loss of a number of their overseas players like Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler has clearly had a negative impact on their performance.

ROY, WILLIAMSON SHINE FOR SRH

For the Sunrisers, however, this is a welcome victory as they have won their second game this season. The charge was led by England batter Jason Roy who played an outstanding knock at the top of the order. The opener scored 60 runs off just 42 deliveries. Veteran batter Wriddhiman Saha did not stick around for long but played an explosive cameo, scoring 18 runs off just 11 deliveries.

Skipper Williamson was out to bat next and he played a captain’s knock. The Kiwi batter made 51 runs off 41 deliveries in what was a well-paced and steady innings. His match-winning boundary was the one that got his individual score over the 50-run mark. He was exceptionally supported by Abhishek Sharma who scored 21 runs off just 16 deliveries. It was a day to forget, however, for Priyam Garg as he was dismissed for a duck.

There were not many positives if one glanced at the RR bowling unit on the day. Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman did a decent job as he picked up a wicket while all-rounder Chris Morris was pretty unimpressive. Mahipal Lomror and Chetan Sakariya picked one wicket each as well.

SANJU SAMSON’S 82 IN VAIN

For the Royals, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 36 runs off 23 deliveries, including five boundaries and one maximum. Skipper Sanju Samson stole the show, scoring 82 runs off just 57 deliveries, but it was in vain. Mahipal Lomror, the middle-order batter, has come into his own this season, scoring a steady knock of 29 runs from 28 deliveries, allowing Samson to play his natural game. However, following his captain’s dismissal, he was unable to assist the Royals in reaching a higher score. Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia were unable to get started.

Siddharth Kaul bowled an outstanding final over for the Sunrisers, dismissing both Samson and Parag. Kaul finished his four-over spell with two wickets and 36 runs conceded. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled well, picking up one wicket and conceding only 28 runs in four overs. Rashid Khan and Sandeep Sharma each took one wicket for the men in orange.
