Joe Root notched up his 22nd ton on Day 3 of the second Test of the India vs England series at Lord’s on Saturday (August 14). Root’s century came a little after India had gotten rid of Jonny Bairstow. His dismissal brought to an end the 121-run stand between him and skipper Root. The two batsmen had done plenty to frustrate India on the day, as the visitors were unable to take a wicket in the first session.

However, Bairstow finally departed in the 79th over when Root was on 95. He copped a short ball from Mohammed Siraj and was unable to keep the shot under control.

It ballooned off his glove and to Virat Kohli at first slip, who collected the ball with ease.

The dismissal did not, however, deter Root too much. He survived an LBW call from Jadeja which never looked close. He also seemed unfazed by India’s tactics.

He eventually brought up his ton in 200 balls, making this the second century of the series thus far. The England skipper has, as always, looked a class apart from most batsmen during this series.

India vs England: How did Day 2 end?

England finished Day 2 of the Lord’s Test against India on Friday at a scoreline of 119/3. Root was unbeaten on 48 after the visitors were bowled out for 364, following a five-wicket haul by veteran pacer James Anderson.

India resumed Day 2 on a score of 276/3, with opener KL Rahul unbeaten on 127 and Ajinkya Rahane on the other end, with just 1 run to his credit.

The English bowlers managed to make their mark quite early, accounting for the dismissals of the duo.

Root went past Graham Gooch to become England’s second-highest run-scorer in Tests. He further crossed 2,000 Test runs against India.
