The India vs England Test series got off to a fine start at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Both sides played some fine cricket but fans were denied a result due to rain. However, both sides also ran into some trouble after the match. A slow over rate has seen them docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points.

Both the teams now have two points each in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 standings heading into the second Test at Lord’s.

Apart from the point deduction, hosts England were also fined 40% of their match fee for slow over-rate. Virat Kohli’s India were also penalised 40% by match referee Chris Broad.

The first Test between England and India at Trent Bridge ended in a draw. With the game evenly poised, both teams were left frustrated on the final day. The game was called off without a ball being bowled.

The two teams will now clash in the second Test at Lord’s on Thursday (12 August). Both will hope to put a win against their names in the ICC World Test Championship table.

How did first India vs England Test match play out?

The fourth day ended with the visitors needing another 157 runs to take a 1-0 lead. The hosts had to hunt down the remaining nine wickets as early as possible.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul had recorded a solid start in testing conditions in the dying stages of Day 4. However, Broad showcased his capabilities yet again, sending back the latter for 26 with a sensational delivery.

Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara saw through the remaining overs, setting up a sublime nail-biting finale for day five. However, it was simply not meant to be.

Both the captains expressed a sense of dismay after a tame end to proceedings.

“We were expecting rain on days three and four but it chose to come on day five. It would have been enjoyable to play and watch, but it’s a shame,” Kohli said.

“The weather disrupted what would have been a very interesting final day. Great Test match to play in and watch as well,” Joe Root said.
