James Anderson finished the innings with three massive wickets to his name. Craig Overton and Sam Curran also got on the act, demolishing the lower order.
England have put their poor performance from the 2nd Test behind them and have shown their class, bowling out India for just 78 runs on Day 1 of the third Test on Wednesday. This is the third-lowest total for India in England. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Virat Kohli led side got off to one of the worst starts. Veteran England pacer James Anderson ripped through India’s top order, picking up three massive wickets to leave the visitors languishing at 56-4 when lunch was called on Day 1. Sam Curran and Craig Overton got into the act quickly after lunch. The pair combined for five wickets, two to Curran and three to Overton. It was sensational stuff from Anderson to start with, and credit to Ollie Robinson, Curran and Overton for keeping the stranglehold.

The morning session turned out to be a brilliant one for England! Four top-order wickets with a little over 50 runs on the board is just the start the home team would’ve hoped for after conceding the series lead in a heated match at Lord’s. It was sensational stuff from Anderson to start with, and credit to Robinson as well for maintaining the stranglehold and breaking the fourth-wicket stand with a superb delivery at the stroke of lunch. Anderson got rid of KL Rahul, Chesteshwar Pujara and the Indian skipper Virat Kohli.
Anderson got the home side off to a superb start. In the fifth ball of the first over Rahul poked at a delivery that was sliding away a bit after getting a few inswingers earlier. That nick was calmly collected by Buttler.
Anderson was at it again! He got rid of the dangerous Pujara. A delivery that straightened from the good length, getting just about enough movement to kiss Pujara’s outside edge before settling into Butler’s gloves.
Jimmy Anderson got Virat Kohli yet again in this ongoing Test series. Once again it was the delivery along the corridor of uncertainty that leaves the batsman in two minds about playing it. Kohli had been going for his shots so far this morning. This time he paid the price by getting the outside edge. Kohli’s wait for his first century in nearly two years continues.
On the other side, Robinson struck at the stroke of lunch as Rahane nicked a ball that straightened from just outside off, much like what happened with Pujara, getting a nick off a tentative push as Buttler does the rest behind the stumps.
Rohit has been just as good with his defence so far. The Indians will hope he stays put and is able to rally big partnerships with Pant, Jadeja and the remainder of the batting order today.
