In a remarkable turn of events, Bangladesh captain Litton Das decided to recall New Zealand batter Ish Sodhi after a controversial run-out attempt at the non-striker’s end. The incident occurred when Sodhi was on 17 runs during the 46th over. Hasan Mahmud, the fast bowler for Bangladesh, ran Sodhi out for leaving the crease early at the non-striker’s end. Mahmud appealed to umpire Marais Erasmus, who then referred the decision to the TV umpire. Replays confirmed that Sodhi was indeed out of his crease when Mahmud dislodged the bails.

Initially, Sodhi walked off the field with a smile on his face, seemingly accepting his dismissal. However, as he approached the boundary rope, Bangladesh’s captain Litton Das approached the umpire and expressed his desire to call Sodhi back. Upon learning of Litton’s gesture, Sodhi rushed back to the middle and embraced Mahmud, acknowledging the unexpected act of sportsmanship. It’s worth noting that Litton’s decision to recall Sodhi might come as a surprise since run-outs at the non-striker’s end had been destigmatized by the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) last year.

In March 2022, the MCC relocated the relevant dismissal terminology from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out) to reduce the perceived stigma associated with such dismissals. Fraser Stewart, MCC Laws Manager, emphasized the legitimacy of run-outs at the non-striker’s end, stating that it is a valid way to dismiss a batter and that it should be considered a run-out according to cricket laws.
