Asia Cup 2023: Unbeaten India set to lock horns with Bangladesh in Super Four encounter

Traditionally, this is the post-monsoon period in Sri Lanka, so these recent rains are clearly not seasonal showers. Unfortunately, more of the same is expected on Friday and we could be in for another stop-start contest.

The unbeaten and finalist Indian team is gearing up for their clash against Bangladesh at Colombo’s R.Premadasa Stadium in the Super Fours’ concluding match. India’s Men in Blue are on cloud nine after securing victories in two consecutive matches against formidable opponents, a challenging feat accomplished over three consecutive days of intense cricket. In contrast, Bangladesh finds themselves out of contention after losing both their Super Fours encounters and enduring a five-day hiatus.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian side displayed remarkable resilience, particularly considering the gruelling schedule. They exhibited exceptional fitness and agility to triumph over arch-rivals Pakistan in a one-sided encounter. Against Sri Lanka, the Lankan Lions posed a formidable challenge, exerting immense pressure on the Indian team.

Rohit Sharma has been in sublime form, notching up three consecutive half-centuries. While he has looked elegant at the crease, he has yet to convert those starts into big scores. The Indian batsmen encountered difficulties against left-arm seamers and spinners. However, there was an occasion when they dominated the former, with the top four all surpassing the 50-run mark. KL Rahul made a remarkable comeback, celebrating his return with a gritty innings against Sri Lanka, where young Dunith Wellalage caused chaos in India’s top order.

The Indian bowling unit has been exceptional, with the seamers and spinners playing vital roles. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, in particular, have spun a web around their opponents during the middle overs. In the clash against Pakistan, Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul imposed their dominance on the Pakistani attack. Subsequently, Kuldeep Yadav and the fast bowlers decimated the arch-rivals and India secured an emphatic 228-run victory to kickstart the second round of the Asia Cup 2023.

The match against co-hosts Sri Lanka proved to be a neck-and-neck battle, with Indian spinners taking control of the game despite a blistering start by the Indian skipper. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj’s fiery spells wreaked havoc on Sri Lanka’s top order in a challenging run-chase. India was put under pressure by Dhananjaya de Silva and the young sensation Wellalage, who stitched together a crucial partnership. However, Indian spin maestros Kuldeep and Jadeja orchestrated a stunning comeback, ultimately securing a 41-run victory and becoming the first team to secure a spot in the grand finale.

Pitch Report and Weather Forecast

Traditionally, this is the post-monsoon period in Sri Lanka, so these recent rains are clearly not seasonal showers. Unfortunately, more of the same is expected on Friday and we could be in for another stop-start contest. The surface should be typically slow with some turn on offer but that could all go for a toss depending on the amount of rain that falls at regular intervals. More dampness could allow for extravagant seam movement, as we’ve seen in previous games.
