Women’s World Boxing Championships: Indian boxers who have won Gold

Following 2010 and 2018, Mary Kom won the gold by beating Steluța Duță and Hanna Okhota, respectively in Women's World Boxing Championship.

India is ready to host the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championship in Delhi. India got this chance after two years since the rights to host Men’s World Championship was taken. The Women’s World Boxing Championships kicked off on March 15 and run until March 26, 2023. The last time India hosted the event was back in 2018. Mary Kom has won six gold medals in the tournament and the most successful boxer in the event. However, it is important to note that not just Mary Kom but there are four other Indian women boxers who have won gold medals for the nation in the championships. Let’s take a look at the list of gold medalists.

Mary Kom

The 40 year-old legendary boxer Mary Kom has won 6 gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018 in the Women’s World Boxing Championship. She is the greatest of all time in boxing. In 2012, London Olympic bronze medalist. In the 2002 edition, she competed against Jang Song-ae in the final and won the gold medal in the 45 kg category. 2005, Mary Kom won the gold against Jong Ok of North Korea in the 46 kg category. Following year 2006, she fought against Steluța Duță to win the gold medal in the 46 kg category. The 2008 edition was the same for Mary as she fought the same opponent in the 2006 WBC where she again grabbed the gold. Following 2010 and 2018, she won the gold by beating Steluța Duță and Hanna Okhota, respectively in Women’s World Boxing Championship.

Sarita Devi

Sarita Devi, another boxer from Manipur, is another boxer to have accomplished this feat for India. She participated in the 2005 edition of the Women’s World Boxing Championship and won bronze medal. Sarita then got an opportunity in 2006 Women’s World Boxing Championship and improved herself from bronze to gold. She defeated Viktoria Rudenko in the 52 kg category to win the gold medal. Furthermore, the achievements of Muhammad Ali inspired her.

Jenny KL

Jenny R Lalremliani, she currently works for Mizoram police. She was one of the four Indians to grab the gold medal in the 2006 Women’s World Boxing Championship. She knocked Klara Svensson in the 63 kg category to win the gold. Jenny RL came to the tournament on the back of consecutive Asian Championships gold.

Lekha KC

Lekha KC coming all the way from down south of India and was trained in Sports Authority of India’s center at Kollam. She was among the four-gold medalist that won the Women’s World Boxing Championship 2006. She competed in the 75 kg category and defeated China’s Jinzi Li to be crowned as the gold medalist. Lekha was awarded the Dhyan Chand award for lifetime achievement in the year 2021.

Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat is the newest Indian to named as Women’s World Boxing Champion with gold medal. Similar to Lekha KC, she was also trained in Sports Authority of India in Visakhapatnam under I.V Rao who himself is Dronacharya awardee. Nikhat won gold medal in the flyweight division held at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championship in Turkey, but the main event came in her life was the 2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She defeated Jitpong Jutamas in the 52 Kg category to win the gold medal.
