The IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in 2023 will be held in the capital city of India, New Delhi. In the presence of International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev and Boxing Federation of India (BFI) President Ajay Singh, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two federations. The news was then announced during a press conference in New Delhi on Wednesday. The BFI and IBA will collaborate to implement an unique bout review system at the Championships. The event’s total prize money will be around Rs 19.50 crore ($2.4 million), and gold medal winners will receive around Rs 81 lakh ($100,000).

“This is my first visit (to India) and it is been fantastic so far. India is very passionate about boxing and conducting the World Championship here will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the innumerable victories as well as inspire many more women to take up the sport and popularize the game more than ever. BFI has worked effortlessly to develop boxing in India and the region and I’m sure they will stage an event to remember,” the IBA president stated.

Ajay Singh, BFI president said, “We are delighted that New Delhi has been named as the host for the World Championships 2023. Hosting three major championships in a span of seven years showcases India’s ability to build infrastructure and capabilities. This is also a reflection of the trust and importance of India in the world of boxing. A tournament of this stature also helps empower women in India giving them the belief to take up sport too.”

Nikhat Zareen, the current world champion, also attended the event. The Commonwealth champion said in her statement, “I am super excited and really looking forward to playing in front of the home crowds. Hosting an event of this stature is hugely prestigious and always inspires millions of young girls to take up the sport. The countdown has already begun and I am looking forward to defending my title here in New Delhi.”

The Women’s World Championships will be held in India for the third time. Since its inception in 2001, the prestigious biennial competition has been conducted in India in 2006 and 2018 – both times in the capital. The Women’s Youth World Championships also took place in India in 2017.
