Russell Westbrook made history by tying Oscar Robertson for most career triple-doubles in the NBA. His efforts ensured the Washington Wizards beat the Indiana Pacers to move into ninth place in the Eastern Conference. Westbrook matched the Hall-of-Fame point guard with his 181st triple-double with 1:39 remaining in the third quarter. Westbrook bought two free throws to give Washington the lead with a second left in overtime. His efforts saw Washington Wizards seal a 133-132 overtime win over the Pacers. There was an incredible block on a Caris LeVert three-point attempt at the buzzer to give the Wizards the win.

That’s the second-most triple-doubles Westbrook has had in a single season. It is second only to his NBA-record 42 in 2016-17 and is the third-most in a single season in NBA history. His record-tying triple-double against Indiana was his fourth straight and seventh in a span of eight games.

INCREDIBLE STATS

Westbrook has in great form in his first season as a Wizard, registering his 35th triple-double this season. He had 14 in the month of April alone, the most in NBA history.

He already owns the distinction of having the most triple-doubles in a season with 42 back in 2016-17. The point guard has a triple-double in 21 of his last 25 games. He has already clinched averaging a triple-double in the season for the fourth time in his career.

He earned his 4th consecutive triple-double when he had his 10th assist to Beal at the end of the third quarter. In overtime, Westbrook scored six of his team’s nine points. He assisted Davis Bertans on the Wizards’ only other basket in the extra frame. He had two key rebounds and then the game-clinching block.

Despite the list of impressive accomplishments, there is something of a narrative that Westbrook has created in his triple-doubles.

The Wizards have four games remaining, beginning with two on the road in Atlanta. They then return home for two games to close out the regular season. At this rate, Westbrook may be returning home to Washington as the all-time record-holder.
