The Phoenix Mercury will head to the Mohegan Sun Arena for a WNBA matchup against the Connecticut Sun on Friday, August 4th. Both these teams faced off in an encounter on Tuesday. The Sun dominated the game to take an 87-63 win on the night.
This was Mercury’s second straight defeat. Skylar Diggins- Smith tried to keep them in the game by scoring 15 points. Sophie Cunningham also added 15 points, but no one else seemed to get going from the team. Both sides were locked at 13 points after the first quarter., but from thereon things started going downhill for the Mercury. They weren’t able to respond to all that the Sun was throwing at them. This eventually led to their defeat, which has pushed them to the seventh position in the table.
Meanwhile, for the Sun, Natisha Hiedeman led the way in their win against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday. She scored 16 points, while Courtney Williams and DeWanna Bonner added 12 points each. Alyssa Thomas and Jonquel Jones contributed with 20 points, which further eased the win for the Connecticut Sun. They have already qualified for the playoffs, but bagging a few more wins will help them finish higher on the table. Their team has been exciting to watch and although the Mercury are a tough side to beat, the Sun could certainly better them when they take the court on Thursday.
Connecticut Sun will be playing without Bria Hartley as she is ruled out for the season after tearing her ACL. Meanwhile, for Mercury, Diamond DeShields and Kia Nurse are both ruled out due to injuries. Brittney Griner will indefinitely be ruled out as she continued to stay behind bars after her wrongful detainment in Russia over drug charges. If no other casualties arise, the coaches will decide to go with their strongest five excluding these players.
