When they square off on Sunday, July 17, the Philippines aims for a historic victory against New Zealand and a chance for a less dangerous opponent in the elimination round of the FIBA Asia Cup. The Filipinos, who were humiliated twice by the Tall Blacks in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers this year, are out for retribution as they attempt to finish second in Group D.

With identical 1-1 records, New Zealand and the Philippines are deadlocked. The victor will likely finish second in Group D and advance to the quarterfinals by playing either Kazakhstan or Syria, the third-seeded team in Group C. The loser, on the other side, will finish third and face either Iran or Japan, who will be Group C’s second seed.

In the absence of an upset by winless India (0-2), Lebanon (2-0) is predicted to finish first in Group D and gain an automatic spot in the quarterfinals. The Philippines has momentum after defeating India by 42 points, but New Zealand lost to Lebanon shockingly by 14 points.
