The Minnesota Lynx will head to the Footprint Center for a WNBA matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, August 10th. Both these sides are coming off wins in their previous encounters.
The Lynx were up against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. It was Kayla McBride that led the way for them with a stellar 20-point performance. Moriah Jefferson also stepped up and racked up 18 points and 6 assists on the night. Rachel Banham came off the bench and exploded to score 12 points to make things extremely easy for the team from Minnesota. The game was very close until the third quarter, but the Lynx took control when the fourth quarter approached and bagged an 81-71 win on the night. With this win, Minnesota moved to ninth place in the standings. They still have a slight chance to qualify for the playoffs, but for that to happen they will have to be at their best for the remaining three games.
Meanwhile, the Mercury was up against the New York Liberty on Saturday. Led by Diamond DeShields’ impressive 25-point performance, the team from Phoenix bagged a stunning 76-62 win on the night. Shey Peddy also had a great game as she scored 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 35 minutes, Sophie Cunningham also had an impact as she scored 18 points and bagged 8 boards to further ease things for Mercury. Sabrina Ionescu put in a valiant 20-point performance. However, no other player from Liberty showed up and this caused them to face yet another disappointing defeat.
The Minnesota Lynx will be without Aerial Powers and Damiris Dantas for this game on Wednesday. As far as Mercury are concerned, they will be playing without veteran Diana Taurasi, who is ruled out of the regular season due to a quad injury. Kia Nurse will also be out, as she continues her recovery from an injury she suffered last season. Brittney Griner will also be indefinitely out as she is reported to face nine years in a Russian prison for possession of drugs.
