Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is reportedly being ‘recruited’ by LeBron James to play for the Los Angeles Lakers should he decide to leave. The rumors of Curry joining the Lakers gathered momentum after ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on his ‘Hoop Collective’ podcast that LeBron wanted him to play for LA and that the recruiting had apparently already begun. “Steph is eligible for a contract extension this summer, and LeBron started recruiting him at the All-Star break,” Windhorst said.

“LeBron has obviously begun the recruiting of Steph, just in the event that he wouldn’t extend and that somehow he would become a free agent and the Lakers would have a swing at him.” LeBron’s recent tweet about Curry also sent the NBA world into a frenzy amid the rumours.

IS IT LIKELY TO HAPPEN?

Curry still has another year-plus remaining on his contract and is eligible to sign another max extension this offseason. Curry will also earn just under $46 million next season and is also eligible to sign a four-year extension worth roughly $215 million.

ESPN’s Warriors’ reporter Nick Friedell said that Curry would sign a new deal before his contract expires in 2022. “Steph is at least gonna sign the extension with the Warriors. Now, what happens a few years from now? We’ll see, because I don’t like what I’m seeing from the Warriors right now…Steph is staying with the Warriors, you can bank on that,” he said.

It is also difficult to envision Curry in a jersey that is not the Warriors’. A lot of people also thought the same about LeBron during his first go-around with the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, it is still unlikely that Curry would leave the Warriors.

On the court, the Warriors will be looking to turn around a disappointing run of form. They won only once in the last four games and will face Miami Heat on Friday.
