Tanner Stuckman, a former star basketball player at Quincy University, is relocating to Europe to pursue his professional basketball career. Stuckman said on Sunday that he will join the Portuguese team Vitoria SC in Guimaraes. The team’s parent football (soccer) club, Vitoria SC, owns it. It competes in the Portuguese Basketball League’s top tier. Stuckman made the decision to transfer after discussing the idea with former Truman State player Mike Carlson, who spent ten years playing abroad, and his agent.
Stuckman signed a one-year contract and will go for Portugal on Sunday via Frankfurt, Germany, and St. Louis, Missouri. Nearly 53,000 people live in Guimaraes, a city in the country’s north. The squad, which includes three players from Portugal and five Americans, will live together in a sizable house that belongs to the team, according to Stuckman, a 2016 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame.

According to Stuckman, with a few exceptions, the regular season begins on September 24 and runs through May. Stuckman began his international career at KaU Koris Karkkilla in Finland, where he averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds, and finished at QU in 2021 after being named to the All-GLVC first team after amassing 1,275 points in his career. Stuckman averaged nine points and four rebounds while playing for the Windsor Express in the NBL Canada last season. He also follows a long line of former QU players like Courtney Belger, Herm Senor, Joe Tagarelli, and Evan McGaughey who have enjoyed prosperous careers abroad. Before his wife Olivia and parents Kurt and Toni come visit in October, Stuckman said he intends to get his bearings and learn more about the nation.
