Bay Area Dragons vs NorthPort Batang Pier PBA match will be held on September 24 at PhilSports Complex. The management of NorthPort, the Gin Kings, and San Miguel Beer will submit the request to the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Office first thing on Tuesday in a huge three-team deal that would send Jamie Malonzo to Barangay Ginebra. The contentious Calvin Oftana transfer from NLEX to TNT using Blackwater as a middleman was just approved by the league, but the Malonzo deal with the Gin Kings to get a player who may replace Stanley Pringle dwarfs that one by a wide margin.
The deal’s terms were still being worked out at the time of writing, but a source with knowledge of them claimed that Ginebra would trade Jeff Chan, Prince Caperal, Kent Salado, and the talented Arvin Tolentino to the Kings in exchange for Malonzo, a high-flier who might be more exciting than Pringle. Von Pesumal, a streak shooter, as well as future draught rights will be forfeited by San Miguel. Before the meeting to formalise the trade began, a NorthPort insider told the Inquirer over the phone, “The team wants to complete its front line [with Caperal] and is pleased about the idea of getting Tolentino.” Malonzo was recently a member of the Gilas Pilipinas team that competed in window four of the Fiba (International Basketball Federation) World Cup qualification after averaging more than 17 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Batang Pier in the Philippine Cup. Tolentino, on the other hand, averaged nearly 12 points per game for the Kings and is on Chot Reyes’ wish list for the Gilas team, which will compete in the fifth window in October.
