Australian middle-distance runner Oliver Hoare, also known as Ollie Hoare, specializes in the 1500-meter event. He won the 1500-meter men's final on August 6, 2022, in Birmingham during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, setting a new Games record and personal best time of 3:30.12. On his way to gold, he defeated Olympic silver medalist and 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and 2022 world champion Jake Wightman, who clinched the silver and bronze respectively. Since Herb Elliott in 1958, Hoare is the first Australian to win the 1500 m or mile title in the Commonwealth Games.

Junior Athletic Career

At the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Hoare won the 1500 meters while competing for the University of Wisconsin. Additionally, he broke the indoor mile marks for Wisconsin University and the Big Ten Conference. After receiving his degree, he signed up to race professionally for the recently established On Athletics Club, which is supported by the On running shoe manufacturer. Hoare set the Australian and Oceanian record for the indoor 1500 m on February 13, 2021 in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix with a time of 3:32.35, which was also the seventh-fastest indoor time ever.

Senior Professional Career

Hoare placed third in a heat of the 1500 m at the 2020 Olympic Games, which were held in Tokyo in July-August 2021 because to the Covid-19 pandemic with a timing of 3:36.09. After placing fourth in the semi-final with a time of 3:34.35, he came in at position 11 in the final (3:35.79). The Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the title. Hoare shattered the Australian and Oceanian indoor 5000-meter record by more than 27 seconds on December 4, 2021 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston with a timing of 13:09.96. Geordie Beamish, another runner from the On Athletics Club, was in second place in that event and set the indoor New Zealand record with a time of 13:12.53.

Hoare raced the men’s Wanamaker Mile at the 114th Millrose Games in New York on his birthdate, January 29, 2022, clocking a time of 3:50.83. The performance knocked Charlie Hunter’s Australian and Oceanian indoor mile records off the table, making Hoare the 11th fastest indoor miler of all time. He also made history by becoming the first Australian to win the Wanamaker Mile in the competition’s 96-year history. Hoare set the Australian and Oceanian outdoor mile record on June 16, 2022, at the Bislett Games in a time of 3:47.48, finishing second to Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Greatest Rivalry

Some of his biggest rivals are Jacob Ingebrigtsen (gold medalist in 1500m at Tokyo Olympics), Jake Wightman (gold medalist in 1500m World Championships 2022), and his compatriot Morgan McDonald.

Coach

Hoare’s present coach is Dathan Ritzenhein of America. Dathan is a retired professional who specialized in long-distance running. He is also the present coach of the On Athletics Club, in which Ollie is also a member.

Personal Life

Ollie was born on 29 January, 1997 in Sydney, Australia. His father, Greg Hoare, was a successful track athlete and a two-time 2 km world beach running champion. At the Australian championships, Hoare won the U15 in 2012 and U17 in 2013 in the 2 km beach runs in addition to team medals in the swim and board events. Hoare competed at the State level in swimming before deciding to focus on athletics. He captured the Australian Under-20 cross-country title in 2015. He afterwards transferred to the Combined Associated School Trinity Grammar after leaving his neighborhood school. Hoare was coached by Brad Woods.
