Inter Milan add Gosens and Caicedo to Champions League squad

Inter Milan have named their Champions League squad after the January transfer window, bringing in new recruits Robin Gosens and Felipe Caicedo. The Serie A champions will face Liverpool in the round of 16 encounter, with the first leg at San Siro on February 16. Head coach Simone Inzaghi was allowed to make up to three changes in the list that played the first part of the tournament. Gosens came in from Atalanta while Caicedo joined from Genoa. Meanwhile, Stefano Sinsi was removed from the list because he was sent out on loan to Sampdoria in the January transfer window.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s name is also missing from the list and it is widely reported he will terminate his contract early by mutual consent. It remains to be seen whether the 36-year-old will seek a new club elsewhere as a free agent or decide to hang up his boots. Kolarov has made four appearances for Inter this season, all as a substitute for a drand total of 44 minutes on the pitch.

Gosens was signed for a deal worth EUR 25 million until 2026 while Caicedo joined on loan until 30 June 2022. Gosens has signed a four-and-a-half year contract in Milan and moves on loan with an obligation to buy. The German left-back signed for Atalanta in 2017 from Dutch outfit Heracles for just EUR 1 million and made over 150 appearances for the Bergamo club in all competitions, scoring 29 goals and registering 20 assists.

The Germany international has been one of the best full-backs in Serie A over the last few seasons. Gosens, Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernandez are the only defenders to have contributed to at least nine goals in the opening 21 Serie A games in the last 15 years.

Gosens’ arrival is certainly going to add more fire power in the left flank for Inter, while the 27-year-old is also a strong defender who has good physical prowess and pace. He can contribute equally to the attack as well as defense.

Meanwhile Caicedo gives another goal-scoring option for Inzaghi. The Ecuadorian forward has scored 22 international goals in his career including a brace against Brazil in 2011, and he is the sixth highest goal scorer in the history of Ecuador national team.
