This week’s WWE SmackDown was very interesting as it featured Gunther defending his newly won Intercontinental Championship against Ricochet. The imposing big man took on the high flyer to remove his threat once and for all. Drew McIntrye and Sheamus got together for a match against The Usos after McIntyre laid out his plan to capture Roman Reigns’ Undisputed Universal Championship and Sami Zayn took on Shinsuke Nakamura in his bid to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. Overall, SmackDown paved the way for what might happen next with regard to the Universal Championship and it threw a lot of curve balls.

SmackDown results in detail

Drew McIntyre opened the show

Drew McIntyre kicked off SmackDown and told the fans about his plan to win the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. The Brawling Brutes interrupted, though, leading to a back-and-forth. Paul Heyman and Adam Pearce came out next with the latter revealing his decision to add McIntyre and Sheamus to Money in the Bank and that, to earn their way to the ladder match, they must come together tonight as a team and beat The Usos in the main event.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs Sami Zayn

Zayn and Nakamura took on each other next in a bid to see who will qualify for the Money in the Bank match. Sami nearly won the match by count-out but Nakamura overcame his onslaught and fought back into the match, making it more competitive down the stretch. This was not a classic by any means as both men are way more adept in the ring but it did have some good moments. Zayn came back into the match and got a clean victory with the Helluva Kick to book his ticket to Money in the Bank.

Winner: Sami Zayn

Raquel Rodriguez and Lacey Evans vs Sonya Deville

After some back and forth in the backstage area, Sonya Deville was put in a two-on-one handicap match against Lacey Evans and Raquel Rodriguez. Once the match started, the former WWE official tried hard to fight but was just outnumbered by Evans and Rodriguez. The two women won the match easily. After the match, Xia Li and Shayna Baszler turned up but were taken down by Rodriguez and Evans, who stood tall to close out the segment.

Winner: Rodriguez and Evans

Ricochet vs Gunther (Intercontinental Championship)

Gunther won the Intercontinental title from Ricochet two weeks ago and has been dominant ever since he made his main roster debut. He had to defend his title against Ricochet in a rematch and he made light work of it. Gunther flatted the high flyer with a wicked clothesline and followed up with a jaw-dropping shotgun dropkick into the corner. He then gave a powerbomb and pinned Ricochet for the win to successfully retain the title.

Winner: Gunther

Tamina vs Shotzi

Aliyah got injured and was replaced by Tamina in a match against Shotzi to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. It was a decent match with nothing spectacular that would interest the fans. Tamina was so close to taking to win after lading a spear only for Shotzi to get her foot under the bottom rope and force the break. Later, Shotzi sent Tamina into the ring post and followed with a modified DDT for the win.

Winner: Shotzi

Drew McIntyre and Sheamus vs The Usos

Drew McIntyre and Sheamus went into this match knowing that their Money in the Bank status was on the line. The two men went after The Usos but they got into each other’s way and tempers flared. This allowed The Usos to take control of the match. After being worn down by The Usos, Sheamus made a hot tag to McIntyre, who exploded. The Scottish Warrior dropped his opponents but was immediately laid back by superkicks. He then managed to recover and wipe out Jimmy Uso with the Claymore for the win.

Winner: Drew McIntyre and Sheamus
