WWE Money In The Bank: A look back at all the winners

The WWE has a lot of matches that are exciting but no match comes close to evoking the excitement of the fans much like the Money In The Bank ladder match. The Money In The Bank match is a one of a kind match where a briefcase is suspended high above the ring which the wrestlers have to dislodge by climbing a ladder. Inside that briefcase is a contract with a guaranteed shot at the WWE title. The superstar who has that contract can cash in on it at any place or any time against the champion of his choice.

Inception

The match was the brainchild of former WWE and current AEW superstar, Chris Jericho. The first-ever match was held at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. At the time, it was exclusive to wrestlers of the Raw brand, and Edge won the inaugural match. From then on until WrestleMania 26, the match became a WrestleMania mainstay. In 2011, WWE came up with an exclusive pay-per-view by the same name and had all the matches there and not on WrestleMania. Unlike the matches at WrestleMania, this new event included two such ladder matches, one each for a contract for a WWE Championship match and a World Heavyweight Championship match, respectively.

Memorable cash-ins

The winners of the coveted briefcase went on to have some iconic moments that will live long in the minds of wrestling fans. The very famous ones that come to mind are Randy Orton cashing in his contract on Daniel Bryan and Triple H turning heel in the process which led to the formation of The Authority. The other mind-blowing moment is the one where Seth Rollins cashed in his contract at WrestleMania 31 in a match that involved Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Michael Cole called that moment, “The heist of the century.”

On this day five years ago – WrestleMania 31 had one of the best, most surprising Mania endings in history.
