On Monday, a story surfaced claiming that Cody Rhodes, the AEW executive vice president, and current TNT Champion, was working without a contract.

Given that current Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion Mickie James would fight in the Women’s Rumble, many quickly speculated that Rhodes would make a cameo in WWE’s Men’s Royal Rumble event at the end of the month.

Although reports have surfaced claiming that Rhodes will not be attending WWE’s event and that no one from AEW will be present, this hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.

Cody Rhodes, the AEW TNT champion, has been a mainstay of the business since its start. He was a key figure in the development of the “All In” show in 2018, which served as a forerunner to All Elite Wrestling, where he has served as an Executive Vice President since the company’s inception in 2019.

Cody Rhodes is now an unrestricted free agent, according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful. After his contract ended at the end of 2021, the TNT champion has been performing without even an official contract for some weeks.

Cody Rhodes concurred with this idea in an interview with Sports Illustrated back in December, saying that the AEW scene would be quite different if he wasn’t a part of it.

“As of now, my future is with AEW. AEW would be very strange without the core members of the revolution. We all still talk. We all have this admiration for each other. I can’t see myself anywhere else, and I’m very optimistic about what the future holds,” Rhodes told Sports Illustrated.

Cody Rhodes returned to Dynamite

Free agents have a long history in the wrestling business, so fans can anticipate the unexpected. Could Cody follow in the footsteps of IMPACT Knockouts Champion Mickie James and compete in the Royal Rumble later this month? We’ll have to wait and see.

Cody still has duties with AEW whether he has a contract or not at the time of writing. In fact, he was back on AEW this week for the episode of Dynamite on January 19th.

Due to interaction with a family member who had tested positive for COVID-19, Rhodes missed the inaugural “Battle of the Belts” event on January 7.

Cody’s brother Dustin Rhodes stepped into battle Guevara for the Interim TNT belt when his original TNT championship match with Sammy Guevara was postponed.
