From his rough early life to his successful wrestling career in WWE, MVP’s story is one of redemption, determination, and resilience. Montel Vontavious Porter is a professional wrestler who has made a significant impact in various wrestling promotions, including TNA (Total Nonstop Action Wrestling), WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), and NJPW (New Japan Pro-Wrestling).

Early Life

MVP was born on October 28, 1973, in Liberty City, Miami, Florida. Growing up in a crime-ridden neighborhood, he faced numerous challenges and temptations. MVP’s passion for sports provided an escape from his troubled surroundings. He excelled in football and received a scholarship to play at the University of Miami. However, a series of incidents, including a run-in with the law, derailed his football career and led to a prison sentence.

During his time in prison, MVP discovered professional wrestling and decided to pursue it as a career upon his release. He dedicated himself to transforming his life, both physically and mentally, in order to chase his newfound dream.

TNA (2003-2006)

MVP began his wrestling career in TNA, where he competed from 2003 to 2006. Initially, he wrestled under the name Antonio Banks and later adopted the moniker “Montel Vontavious Porter” upon his arrival in WWE. During his time in TNA, MVP showcased his charisma and athleticism, engaging in memorable feuds with wrestlers like Eric Young, Raven, and Samoa Joe. He held the TNA Tag Team Championship with Kenny King as part of the faction known as The Beat Down Clan.

WWE (2006 – 2010)

MVP began his wrestling career in 2002 on the independent circuit, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience. His talent and charisma caught the attention of WWE, and he signed with the company in 2005. MVP made his WWE debut in 2006, adopting the character of a brash, arrogant athlete with a penchant for luxury and extravagance. MVP had a memorable undefeated streak on SmackDown, earning him the nickname “The Franchise Playa.” He became a fan favorite and won the United States Championship, holding it for a record-breaking 343 days.

MVP’s first major breakthrough came in 2007 when he entered a storyline rivalry with Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, and Randy Orton. MVP left WWE in 2010 to pursue other opportunities. Their series of matches showcased MVP’s in-ring ability and elevated his status as a rising star. His unique persona, complete with a distinctive entrance and a removable accessory called the “VIP Lounge,” set him apart from other wrestlers.

NJPW (2011-2014)

After leaving WWE, MVP ventured into the Japanese wrestling scene, specifically joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) from 2011 to 2014. In NJPW, MVP showcased his versatility and had memorable matches against notable talents such as Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tetsuya Naito, and Kazuchika Okada. He also formed a tag team called “The Players” with Shelton Benjamin, winning the IWGP Tag Team Championship.

WWE (2020 – Present)

MVP’s return to WWE in 2020 was met with excitement from fans. He joined forces with Bobby Lashley and formed The Hurt Business stable, which also included Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander. MVP served as the mouthpiece for the group, using his mic skills to elevate their presence and success. Under MVP’s leadership, Lashley captured the WWE Championship, and The Hurt Business gained significant momentum. But in 2023, MVP turned against Bobby and aligned himself with Omos. MVP helped Omos def. Lashley at WrestleMania Backlash. Bobby got his revenge at WWE Hell in a Cell in a handicap match 2-on-1, when he defeated both MVP and Omos and ended their feud.
