After graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in teaching, he was introduced to professional wrestling by George “The Animal” Steele and entered the business right away.

Early Wrestling Career

He wrestled under the ring name Rob Rechsteiner for a while before switching to Rick Steiner. He worked for the American Wrestling Association, the Montreal Promotion International Wrestling, and the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF). He established a tag team with Sting in the UWF and won the UWF World Tag Team Championship in 1987. He also fought for New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1987. Jim Crockett Jr. purchased the UWF in 1988, acquiring a large portion of its roster (including Steiner) for his National Wrestling Alliance area, Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP).
